The popular group, which is made up of siblings Jay, Shereen and Kyle Cutkelvin from Scotland, came under fire from outraged viewers for performing a mash-up of the late Wham! star’s covers instead of one of his original songs.
As they proceeded to put their own spin on a medley of Seal’s Killer and The Temptation’s Papa Was A Rolling Stone, fans of the ITV talent show rushed to Twitter to voice their anger.
“So let me get this straight, the Calvert-Lewins or whatever they’re called are covering Seal and The Temptations… On George Michael week,” one said, while another blasted: “Why did The Cutkelvins not do a George Michael song? Disrespectful doing a cover when he gave so much.”
“What, exactly, has this got to do with George Michael,” a third disgruntled viewer asked, as another chipped in sarcastically: “Next week for Elton John week The Cutkelvins will sing ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ cos Elton sung it in the shower once.”
As many social media users criticised the decision, which appeared to break the rules of the themed week, another confused fan asked: “George Michael has so many incredible songs… So why didn’t The Cutkelvins sing one of them? Rules clearly don’t apply to them.”
The Cutkelvins did have some supporters, however, as one Twitter user wrote: “I enjoyed the performance The Cutkelvins #XFactor that style totally suited you.”
“Easily The Cutkelvins’ best performance so far,” said another. “Glad they listened to Nicole’s advice.”
X Factor favourites Rak-Su also toyed with the theme, performing original rap lyrics in between the chorus of hit Faith.
X Factor continues tonight at 7.30pm on ITV.
