Pitch Battle is a new singing competition which sees choirs from across the UK compete head-to-head in front of a star-studded panel of judges.
Gareth Malone told Express.co.uk that Pitch Battle’s dramatic format helps it stand apart other talent shows like Britain’s Got Talent.
The 41-year-old said the “real power moment” is when the guest judges walk on stage.
He added: “We get to decide who we prefer and then the guest judge reveals it by walking towards them. It’s brilliant.”
What time is Pitch Battle on?
Pitch Battle airs on BBC One at 7:30pm on Saturday 17 June, putting it in direct competition with ITV’s The Voice Kids.
The show will be available on BBC iPlayer shortly after broadcast and can be streamed live via the iPlayer app or website.
Who are the Pitch Battle judges?
Choirmaster Gareth and US R&B sensation Kelis will be joined on the panel by a number of guest judges including Seal, Joe Jonas, and Chaka Khan.
Saturday’s episode will feature Will Young after the planned first instalment was pulled in light of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
The BBC has revealed that it has changed the episode order from the original launch instalment due to the “lyrics and themes” in the programme.
The original first episode, which featured Bebe Rhexa, will now air next week.
Pitch Battle will be presented by former Great British Bake Off host Mel Giedroyc.
She said: “I am so excited to be presenting this new show and Pitch Battle will definitely be bringing some cracking music into people’s living rooms every Saturday!”
What is the format of Pitch Battle?
With 30 choirs competing in total, the heats will see groups go head-to-head in a series of “riff-offs”. The last two standing battle to win a place in the live final.
During the stand-off, acts will perform a song from the archive of the celebrity judge, before the guest indicates the winner by joining them on stage.
The 41-year-old revealed that Seal joined a choir’s rendition of Kiss From A Rose during his stint on the panel.
“He joined in on the high note and sang with the choir – honestly, it was just amazing. There’s nothing like it,” he said.
The winning choir will win a cash prize of £50,000.
