‘[The dogs] had been bitten by rats and there were maggots in them. I must have touched my mouth with my hand and I started vomiting at five in the morning,’ he recalled of the horrific ordeal.

Paul was ‘heading for renal failure’ but was thankfully saved.

Not being his first brush with death, Paul added: ‘I used to think I was invincible, but now I’m running out of lives.’

He has suffered three heart attacks in the past.

With the recent deaths of his celebrity friends, such as Cilla Black, Paul reflected: ‘I’ve lost lots of friends lately to cancer – and the AIDS years were like a clean sweep of all my mates.

‘You have to accept things and realise you haven’t got 50 years any more like you had as a teenager.’

Paul – who recently got married in a secret service – mentioned Cilla when he was interviewed about his nuptials.

‘She would be over the moon. It was just such a shame she wasn’t there. She wouldn’t have sung. She would never sing in public.

‘If anyone said: “Cilla, give us a song”, she’d say: “I can’t, me voice is bad, but Paul will”. She wouldn’t get up at a wedding. She never used to sing in the shower or round the house.’

Paul appeared on This Morning last Friday with two of his rescue dogs, chatting to Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes.

He was on the show to chat about his life in the countryside with new husband Andre Portasio when his smaller pooch began climbing around on the hay bales.

Being live TV, it was unavoidable when the dog squatted and urinated on the bale – twice.

‘She’s normally so well behaved!’ he exclaimed, while Ruth and Eamonn were left in stitches.
