Fans praise 'brave' Ant McPartlin for battling addiction


Declan Donnelly has thanked fans for their support on social media, following the announcement that his co-star Ant McPartlin is checking into rehab to battle drink and drug addiction.

Taking to the duo’s joint Twitter on Sunday, the 41-year-old expressed his gratitude to their beloved followers at the difficult time, and admitted his right hand man will be incredibly ‘touched’ by their support.

The message follows the news that Ant will be receiving two months of professional treatment for both depression and substance abuse – which stemmed following a severe knee injury and failure to conceive with his wife Lisa.

Now hours before news broke, Declan jetted out of London as after coming to his best friend Ant aid, following his emotional drink and drug confession. 

The TV host was spotted by a fan who asked for a selfie as he made his way through the terminal, before the shock announcement.

Dec is said to be devastated for his best pal and was left shell shocked by Ant’s revelations of drink and drug use. It is thought Dec is jetting out of London to sort his own head out after making sure Ant checked into rehab. 

Since news of Ant’s struggle broke, hundreds of followers penned their admiration for him on social media – praising his ‘courage’ in admitting his struggles so openly, and wishing him a ‘safe and happy recovery’.

Ant confirmed he planned to battle his demons in rehab on Saturday – after admitting he had spiralled into depression and substance abuse following a painful knee injury and fertility issues.

ANT’S PLEA FOR HELP FROM FRIEND DEC

The TV presenter fought back tears when he told his best pal and right hand man Dec of his struggles, pleading: ‘Mate, I need help now.’

An insider told the publication: ‘For Dec it was a bit of a bombshell hearing about these addiction problems.

‘He had no idea of the full extent of the torment his best friend was going through.’

Following his statement, fans immediately flooded to social media to praise Ant’s strength and courage for coming forward with his struggles, and wish him well on his journey to recovery.

One began in admiration of the star: ‘Ant mcpartlin, don’t be ashamed man, that takes guts to say and do what you have done and we respect that, so fair play man!!!’

Ant revealed he is planning to check in to rehab for alcohol and drug addiction, on Saturday. 

The TV personality to The Sun about his demons, and admitted he’s ‘let people down’ before thanking his wife Lisa Armstrong and co-star Declan Donnelly for the support provided. 

In his frank admission, it was revealed he faces at least two months of treatment in a clinic after depression led to an addiction to prescription drugs along with substance abuse problems.

The Sun revealed the devastating problems that led to Ant’s rehab stay – including chronic pain caused by a knee injury two years ago, anxiety over failure to conceive with Lisa and depression which led to his substance abuse. 

His statement to the publication read: ‘The first step is to admit to yourself you need help. I’ve let people down. I’m truly sorry.  I feel like I have let a lot of people down and for that I’m truly sorry. I want to thank my wife, family and closest friends through this really difficult time. 

‘I have spoken out because I think it is important that people ask for help if they are going through a rough time and get the proper treatment to help their recovery.’ 

Meanwhile, Dec was pictured jetting out of London hours before news broke that he helped best friend Ant McPartlin check into rehab. 

MailOnline has contacted a representative for Ant for comment. 

He has been battling his condition for two years after an operation on his knee went wrong, leaving him in constant pain. Following his knee operation he began taking the opioid painkiller Tramadol and became addicted.

It was said people close to him had become concerned that Ant was combining the drug with alcohol, worsening the effects. A friend said: ‘He began abusing substances when he was drunk.’ 

Ant underwent further knee surgery at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London last Tuesday and is expected to be in a wheelchair for weeks. Doctors had feared his knee could collapse, leaving him crippled. It is not known where he is undergoing his rehabilitation. 

The paper further reported that the TV presenter fought back tears when he told his best pal and right hand man Dec of his struggles, pleading: ‘Mate, I need help now.’

After hearing the news of Ant’s struggles, Dec reportedly contacted counsellors on behalf of his friend, before urging him to seek professional help in rehab.

In a candid interview in 2013, Ant confirmed he and Dec had ‘dabbled’ in drugs, as he told The Guardian’s Weekend magazine: ‘Years ago, yeah (we tried drugs), but we’re not really druggy people, that’s the thing. 

‘I think you either go into that crowd as a kid or you don’t, and we didn’t. We found the love of alcohol very early on and we stayed with it.’

Dec added: ‘There’s a real pub culture where we’re from in Newcastle, so we’re just more boozy people.’

In February, in an interview with Fabulous Magazine, Ant – who previously spoken about his fertility struggles – revealed he would be ‘over the moon’ to become a dad.

The star, who has been married to Lisa since 2006, couldn’t resist gushing about his other half, stating: ‘I think I’m lucky. Lisa works in the industry and understands it. She’s constantly working – sometimes more than me!’
